A Medieval French Legend
Over the centuries, the story of the Juggler of Notre Dame has been adapted and re-adapted in a myriad of ways.
The basic story follows an entertainer – oftentimes portrayed as a juggler or acrobat – who gives up his career to join a monastery. While at the monastery, he sees the monks worshipping a statue of the Virgin Mary. He decides to use his own talents to worship her, and performs his entertainment routine before her statue. The Virgin Mary, moved by his generous gift, blesses him.
